What is Galleri® cancer testing?
Galleri cancer testing is a preventive measure that screens for the most common types of cancer. More specifically, it analyzes a blood sample to assess your cancer risk.
The Galleri test is unique because it allows your provider to check for circulating tumor DNA. This DNA is present in your blood if you have a cancerous tumor. Since many cancerous tumors start small and take years to detect, the Galleri test makes it easier to catch cancer early.
Early cancer detection reduces the risk of complications and makes it easier to treat cancer effectively.
Can Galleri cancer testing detect more than one type of cancer?
Yes. At Livingspring Family Medical Center, Dr. Olabintan uses Galleri cancer testing to screen for several types of cancer, including:
- Anal cancer
- Breast cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Liver cancer
- Oral cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Uterine cancer
Galleri cancer testing can detect leukemia — a cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood cells.
How does Galleri cancer testing work?
Galleri cancer testing is a prescription screening, so only a licensed medical provider, like Dr. Olabintan, can order it. If she determines you can benefit, Dr. Olabintan draws a blood sample from a vein in your arm and sends it to a nearby lab for analysis.
The Galleri cancer test is accurate and has a low false positive rate. Research shows that 99% of people who take the test receive a No Cancer Signal Detected (negative) result. About 1% of people ages 50 and older receive a positive test.
If your test results are positive, Dr. Olabintan will order additional screens. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to worry. Only about 40% of people who receive a positive test end up having cancer.
What if I have cancer?
If Dr. Olabintan determines you have cancer, she develops a personalized treatment plan. She also refers you to a cancer specialist (oncologist) who helps coordinate your care. Depending on the type of cancer you have and its severity, treatment might include:
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Stem cell transplants
- Photodynamic therapy
- Interventional radiology
Most people benefit from several treatments.
